5-century jeweleries from Kyrgyzstan haven't been sold by Sotheby's – Culture Ministry

Jeweleries from Kyrgyzstan dated by the 5th century haven't been yet sold at Sotheby's, reports the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism.

The jeweleries, made of gold, garnet stones and glass, were initially sold for £242.5 thousand on 3 December 2014 during the Sotheby's auction. The Culture Ministry of Kyrgyzstan explained, however, the sale procedure had been suspended then.

The jeweleries dated by the Hunnic era – nomadic central Asian people living in central and eastern Europe about AD 450 – belonged to Sansyzbai Umutkor, who bought them in 1890-1895. Afterwards, they were passed on from generation to generation and became a family heirloom. In 2013, they were exported to Slovakia.

The Kyrgyz Ministry thus underlined again the jeweleries had never belonged to the state as a movable cultural heritage but was privately owned. At the same time, no permission was granted to export the jeweleries from the country.
