Recent accusations by some Kyrgyz media of Freedom House's intentions to overthrow the Government are absurd. Furthermore, prosecution of the non-governmental organization's staff is illegal, according to an official press release from the organization.
Freedom House remains committed to working with the Government and citizens of Kyrgyzstan on elimination of discrimination, promotion of democratic reforms and strengthening of respect for the fundamental rights of all citizens, including the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, the statement said.
For more than a decade of work in Kyrgyzstan, Freedom House has urged the Government to respect the rights of all Kyrgyz citizens regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion.
One of the projects implemented by Freedom House in Kyrgyzstan at the moment aims to monitor and assess the level of access to public services and Uzbek-language media. The project is designed to assist in overcoming ethnic strife.
Freedom House is a U.S.-based organization that conducts research and advocacy on democracy, political freedom and human rights. It was founded in October 1941. The organization describes itself as a “clear voice for democracy and freedom around the world.”
