More than 2,500 stateless persons were revealed in southern Kyrgyzstan, the State Registration Service of Kyrgyzstan said.
Stateless persons in Osh city and Osh region reached 1,402, in Jalal-Abad region – 1,180. They include USSR passport holders of 1974 type, children who have no birth registration and others.
Mobile groups comprised of passport office specialists, lawyers provided legal assistance to stateless persons in obtaining Kyrgyz passports. 23 mobile groups work in the south of Kyrgyzstan in total.
The project on identification, reduction of stateless persons and collection of biometric data in the south of Kyrgyzstan is carried out in cooperation with the Population Registration Department, UNHCR.
The project is now in run in Chui region and will then reach other regions of the country.
