Kyrgyzstan best among Central Asia in 2016 World Press Freedom Index

Kyrgyzstan was ranked the 85th among 180 countries in the 2016 World Press Freedom Index annual report by the international human rights organization Reporters Without Borders.

Kyrgyzstan's score is 30.16.

This performance made Kyrgyzstan the best among the Central Asian countries: Tajikistan - 150th, Kazakhstan - 160th, Uzbekistan - 166th, and Turkmenistan - 178th.

"The pluralism of the Kyrgyz media is exceptional in Central Asia but major challenges remain. There is still a great deal of self-censorship on certain subjects, and media owners dictate most editorial policies. Civil society has managed to block proposed draconian laws but the parliament has reintroduced prison sentences for certain media offences and plans to impose a Russian-style ban on “homosexual propaganda.” A journalist was fined 2 million soms (24,000 euros) in June 2015 for ‘”insulting the president," said in the report.

Nevertheless, Kyrgyzstan has improved its standing moving 3 positions up from the 88th spot in 2015 to the 85th in 2016.
